Situated on a high ridge up from the sea, the village of Mellieha has some good restaurants and shops. Primarily catering for the Maltese residents and the luxury villa residents surrounding the area, tourists also find there is everything they need. Famed for its friendly people, golden beach and superb diving Mellieha is a definite visit when travelling to Malta.

Leading downwards from the village is a winding road that takes you to Mellieha Bay or Ghadira as the Maltese call it. The beach is the longest sandy beach in Malta and is famed for its golden sand. Clean, with good clear water it is not hard to see why this is the most popular beach in Malta. Facilities over the years have improved and include toilets, café and bar, deck chair, windsurfing, waterskiing and canoe hire as well as other lesser needs. As you would expect, because of all the above it is extremely popular in the summer, in particular the weekends and it is advisable to arrive early to get a good place.

On the road down from Mellieha, there is an option to go to Popeye Village and Anchor Bay which is about halfway down. In 1980 Popeye the movie was filmed and Malta was chosen as the setting for the fishing village Sweethaven. Although the movie flopped, the set which was only built to last two months has remained intact ever since and proves to be a popular tourist attraction.
